OUR STORY
5th generation dairy farm and brewery
We are a fifth generation dairy farm, sustainably farming 1000 acres of pastures and crops. Our dairy barn is powered by solar and wind power. We are deeply connected to our roots and always conscious about how we take care of our land and animals. Resilience and the ability to work hard and take whatever life throws at us are some of our best attributes. We are one of the largest pasture based dairy farms in the state. April-October, our farm store is open with our own raw milk, grass-fed beef, ice cream, produce, beer, local groceries and goods.
Carter and Stevens is also home to Stone Cow Brewery. The brewery is open year round with many great craft beer options, as well as non-alcoholic options. Our farm kitchen, located in the brewery, is open October-June, featuring our own and local food options, see a sample menu here. The field to flame BBQ is open June-October, see sample menu here. A free concert series features great local artists and musicians. The live music schedule can be found on our events page.
a new england tradition
We are proud of our long history in rural New England farming.
Since 1938 we have operated a dairy farm here in Barre. For over eighty years, our family has cared for this land and our animals, as we continue to do today. What started out as an operation in a tent by our founder, Donald Carter, has now grown into an 1,000 acre, 5th generation farm with over two hundred head of cattle.
While you are enjoying your ice cream, BBQ, and brews, our farmers are still milking cows, making hay, tending to our fields, and helping to bring new calves into the world as we have been doing for 29,000 days in a row!
We are so excited to share a little slice of traditional rural life with you- so enjoy the great views, fresh air, green space, and a little something from our farm to fill your belly and spirit.
