Closed for the Winter Season. We'll be back in the Spring. Thanks for another great year. We'll see you all in the spring of 2012 up at the store and grill. We have a lot of new things planned for the upcoming year. At Carter & Stevens Farm Store in Barre, Massachusetts, we are dedicated to preserving New England agriculture. With five generations and counting, our family has maintained our 1,000-acre dairy farm since 1938. We milk 100 cows everyday at the farm, which guarantees the freshest quality milk for our customers. At our store, we offer our own milk in glass bottles, old fashion ice cream, and fresh vegetables as well as regional beers & wines and the best local foods.In addition, our outdoor fieldstone BBQ grill restaurant is among the most unique dining experiences rural New England has to offer. MilkOur own Milk in glass bottles! At Carter & Stevens Farm, our family has been milking cows twice a day, everyday, since 1938. When you buy a gallon of our milk you are getting a lot more than just a delicious drink. We do not treat our cows with hormones and there are no antibiotics in our milk. Our milk is extremely fresh because we bottle twice a week. Our cows eat grass all day long in a pasture, which means they are happy, healthy and free range!When you buy our milk you are directly contributing to keeping 1,000 acres of land in Barre undeveloped as open space. So, when you see that beautiful field near your home,… let it be a reminder to pick up Carter & Stevens Farm milk! In short, when you buy our milk you provide your family with a safe and healthy product, help the environment, and support ethical treatment of cows...WOW!Ice CreamTry our delicious homemade Ice cream, made with our own milk. We have 26 different flavors to choose from. We also have unique Sundaes like the “Bee Wild” made with warm honey (produced here on the farm), “Papa’s Maple Sundae” with our own maple syrup, and the “Chocolate Manure Pit” - enough to satisfy any chocolate-lover’'s craving! Fresh ProduceWe have a great assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, most of which we grow ourselves using organic farming practices. If we don'’t grow a certain fruit or vegetable ourselves we always buy locally from our friends at nearby farms. We are especially famous for our outstanding sweet corn, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, squash, and pumpkins!♣We pick our Sweet Corn daily from late July all the way unhtil October (or first frost). We grow more than 15 different varieties of sweet corn each year. Vote on your favorite at the end of the year. From “Silver King” (white corn) to “Candy Store” varieties we are bound to please even the pickiest cornasure!♣Our Tomatoes are the biggest and ripest you'’ll find anywhere. All that fresh fertilizer from the farm helps them grow.♣Pumpkins are a fall favorite here, too. We have big carving pumpkins and small ones for the kids as well. Be sure to visit us leading up to Halloween for your next jack-o-lantern project. We usually grow red, orange, and white pumpkin varieties each year. In addition, we also have gourds, corn stalks, mums, Indian corn, sunflowers, and everything else you can imagine for your fall decorating (and perhaps some things you can’t imagine too). Maple SyrupVisitors are always welcome to come see our maple boiling operation in the spring time (February through March). Dan Stevens “is the maple master at the farm. We tap our own trees and boil the sap in the sugar house on the farm. Beer & WineOur great selection of LOCAL beer and wine will surprise you. We sell wine from three different local vineyards. The Hardwick Vineyard & Winery makes six different wines. Our favorite is the Cranberry! We also sell Wine from Charlton Orchard’s Obadiah Macintyre winery. They make great fruit wines like Black Gold made with ripe blackberries. West County Hard Cider is also available at our store. Molly’'s personal favorite is the Redfield cider because it's great on a hot summer day. We also have a wide selection of wine from all over the world!♣Wine not your cup of tea? We have a great local beer selection, including beer from Berkshire Brewing Company, Wachusett Brewing Company, Magic Hat, Long Trail, Ommegang and many many more that you'll just have to come and see for yourself. Of course, we also carry the basics like Budweiser, Coors and Miller High LIfe.Local ProductsTons of local products and groceries that are hard to find are available at our farm. Farmer Sean’'s favorite is Dean’'s Beans Fair Trade Coffee, roasted in nearby Orange, MA. We carry Smith's Country Cheese from Winchendon, MA, Westfield Farm Goat Cheese from Hubbardston, MA, Robinson's Farm organic cheese from Hardwick, MA, as well as other local and international cheeses. Some of our other popular store products include: Mad House Munchies local potato chips (VT). Appalachian Naturals salsas and sauces (MA), Vermont Sweet Maple Soda, Kathy'’s Family bath & beauty products (MA). Gagne’s 72 layer cream cheese herb biscuits (ME). Vermont Smoked Sausage, and the list goes on and on...Got a sweet tooth? We sell candy by the pound. We have all the old favorites and some new sweets too! Shopping for the person who has everything? Family Fun We want you to make Carter and Stevens Farm- YOUR family's farm.Our two playgounds have plenty of things for the kids to explore. Kids can try milking our mascot cow "Queenie". We also have a fenced in play area perfect for entertaing the pre-school aged kids, while you enjoy a delicous grass fed beef burger and a local beer.Visit our farm animals, and feed them a snack. You can even pick your own eggs in our hen house!Our 1000 acres is the perfect place to take a hike. Ask about or hiking trails that lead to our milking facility, and other atractions.We offer pick your own blue berries, raspberries, and black raspberries in season.Our farm is your farm, so please stop in anytime to play on the play ground, or visit our Animals. Mrs Truffles the pig always loves to have company!

Beef

We are proud to offer you our healthy, sustainable, grass fed beef. We have ground beef, steaks, and roasts available. We also have our own all natural grass fed beef hot dogs, and Italian sausages. When you buy our grass fed ground beef, you are getting one cow, not a blend of 100 cows. The beef is from a healthy animal that lived its life grazing on pastures. Also, grass fed beef has great health benefits! It is lower in fat than grain fed beef, and is more nutritious (more beta-carotene, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids). It is ALL NATURAL. No dyes, preservatives, hormones. Just good old-fashioned beef! PACKAGE DEALS: Call or stop in for pricing. We usually have the meat in stock, but it takes us a while to weigh it all so please call ahead or pre-order for these deals. The Fieldstone Grill has grown to become a local landmark. We envite you and your family to let us serve you some of the best food on the planet. Our split wood is available in any size you need to heat your home. All standard cuts available. At our farm, we believe heating a home with wood is best. Wood is a renewable resource that has been burned for warmth in New England since the first early settlements. Compost

Composted Manure

Our cow manure compost is nutrient-rich and will help your garden reach its full potential. We use red wiggler worms to help break down the cow manure, producing a consistently nutritious, dark black compost with loads of organic matter. Our compost is natural and environmentally safe. Synthetic fertilizers just don't match up to the real thing. We sell compost by the truck load by the yard or pre-bagged. GREEN Pastures

Wind Power

Our pastures are REALLY Green! On our windy back hill pasture we have a 15kw Proven wind turbine. We use the electricity generated from it to milk our cows, and cool the milk! We are proud to minimalize our carbon footprint, and help pioneer the wind energy movement.Carter and Stevens Farm has the highest amount of acres of pastures in the state of Massachusetts. We maximize our land use by putting our cows on land that is too rocky or steep to be cultivated. Not only do our milking cows get to enjoy the fresh air and green grass, but we also raise our heifers in pastures as well. And of course, all our grass-fed beef cows are pasture-based.

THE ALLEN FAMILYWe are only the second family to own our farm in its more than 250 years of continous operation. The Allen family started the farm in 1749. They began by clearing the land and building a home and post-and-beam barns.The Allen family ran a successful farm operation until they suffered from a massive barn fire where they lost many livestock and the means to rebuild during the height of the Great Depression. THE CARTER FAMILYAfter graduating from the local high school in Barre, Donald Carter went on to study forestry at the University of Maine in Orono. After returning from college, Donald worked on area farms and started his own small farm on the land behind his parents' home. Without a propper barn, he milked cows under a canvas tent and shipped his milk cans by train to the city for processing and sale. With a local reputation as an eager young farmer, Donald purchased the Allen family farm in 1938 with his wife Thelma and young daughter Audrey. Donald's first project on the farm included the building of a new barn, which luckily survived the hurrican that devastated much of Worcester country later that same year. THE STEVENS FAMILYDonald's daughter Audrey later married a young dairy farmer named Daniel Stevens from the nearby town of Rutland. Together they had two children- Sherry and Philip. Donald Carter and Daniel Stevens became partners in the farm which gave us our name of Carter & Stevens Farm. As partners in thier expanding business, Donald and Daniel decided to build a new milking parlor in 1965. Daniel eventually became partners in the farm with his son Philip who married Erin Kelley. Together, they had four children and expanded the farm by buying a second farm in Barre, where the store is currently located. Philip's daughter Molly Stevens DuBois attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the Universtiy of Massachusetts where she met her future husband Sean DuBois. Their children Maple and Rye are the fifth generation on the farm.

Harvest Fest 2011

***EVENT STILL RUNNING DISPITE SNOW STORM***CHANGES TO TO WEATHER LISTED BELOWSaturday Oct. 29 (RAIN DATE: Sunday Oct. 30)This year's Annual Harvest Fest is going to be the best one yet. Our store is only 7 years old and every year we seem to find new ways to celebrate the harvest. This year, we will be shooting pumpkins hundreds of feet with our new 26-foot tall catapult. Nothing says " Thanks mother nature for another great harvest" quite like this. Catapulting pumpkin sales will be donated to UNICEF. Our catapult is featured in the new Dunkin' Donuts television commercial currently airing nation-wide. The commercial includes a farmer using the catapult to shoot pumpkins into a Dunkin Donuts store as part of the seasonal pumpkin flavored coffee campaign. Come see us on Oct. 29 to see this famous catapult do what it was built for; "Shooting Pumpkins."
